Starting on Thursday, June 3rd, enjoy the Farmers Market while listening to Music in the park by Gayla Drake Paul downtown.

Friday Fest is back! The block party begins downtown Main Street at 4pm. Visit the local shops while enjoying the Pro Sport Kite Fly.

Saturday, June 5th, the fun begins early! There will be a Horse Show, Kids Fishing Derby, Kites Over Grinnell, Kids Disc Golf Clinic and don't forget the AGA Pro BMX Shows!

The Pioneers have been featured in Sports Illustrated and ESPN the Magazine. They have a very unique style known as “The System."
Sometimes referred to as the anti-Princeton offense, “The System"
emphasizes a torrid pace of play where offensive possesions last about
5 seconds and typically end with a three-pointer.

It's sure to be an exciting game! The game starts at 7pm. For those wishing to carpool we will meet at Voodoo Lounge at 5:30pm. Post game festivities will be at La Cabana.

An Afternoon at the Gun Range

Sunday October 18 Brownell’s has invited all GYP members out to the range for a day of shooting and fun from 2pm-5pm!

Members will be able to shoot the AR-15, a semi-automatic rifle. All experience levels are welcome. Range Safety Officers will be onsite to demonstrate and assist members.

We will be meeting at the Hy-Vee parking lot at 1:30pm for those wishing to carpool.

Please RSVP to the evite whether you will be going directly to the range or if you would like to meet and carpool.

Grinnell College Celebrates 150 years/Last Friday Fest of the year

Grinnell College will be celebrating 150 years in Grinnell!

The College will be holding parents weekend beginning on Friday and have several activities open to the public during this time.

There will be campus tours Friday October 2nd at 11am and 3pm, which depart from the Joe Rosenfield Center lobby located at 1115 8th Ave.

Saturday October 3rd, from 11:30-1:30 enjoy a Taste of Grinnell. Sample cuisine from Grinnell's unique and outstanding local restaurants for a modest price.

At 8:30pm join Professor George Drake as he presents "The History of Yesterday and Today" a look at Grinnell College history in room 101 at the Joe Rosenfield Center.

The last Friday Fest of the year will be held on Friday October 2nd. Come downtown and enjoy music by a Grinnell College Band from 4-5:30, Crossroads from 6-9. 2009 YPIowa Conference

The 2009 YPIowa Conference hosted by The Young Professionals Connection of Des Moines is a chance for young professionals from across the state to get together to network, share, and learn from each other, as well as established professionals and speakers not only from Iowa, but across the nation. The 2009 YPIowa Conference will focus on three essential components: live, work and play; with breakout sessions that are interactive and engaging. Some of this year’s speakers include Motivational Presenter and Strategic Planner, Jim Verlengia, Business Leader Kyle Krause and the Keynote Speaker “The Nametag Guy”, Scott Ginsberg.

When and Where?
The 2009 YPIowa Conference will be held Thursday, September 17th and Friday, September 18th. The primary events of the conference will be held in Des Moines, IA at The Downtown Marriott Hotel – 700 Grand Ave. Other social events will be held in the surrounding metro area.

This event will be an opportunity to browse through their selection of books, clothing, games, toys and more! The Pioneer Bookshop would like to extend a special offer to our GYP guests on all purchases. The Pioneer Bookshop will be serving wine, a non-alcoholic beverage, cheese and crackers.

The events are targeted at “Young” Professionals (20’s -40’s) and Angela, the new exec at the Chamber would like to get the GYPs involved right away for input, naming the event, outlining details and volunteer opportunities.

There will be a meeting on Thursday, May 21st from 7:30-8:30 AM at Saint's Rest to brainstorm for ideas for future events! Grinnell United Way

United Way seeks board members to help raise funds for and awareness about the organizations serving at-risk and disadvantaged populations in Grinnell and Poweshiek County. Board members also help in making funding decisions, and 99 percent of that support stays in Grinnell and Poweshiek County. Agencies focusing on youth receive 30 percent of the local support, low-income populations receive another 30 percent, and women receive 16 percent. Agencies focusing on mental health, emergency services, and seniors also receive support from United Way.

Serving on the United Way is an opportunity to connect with local businesses while making a lasting impact on our community. Email board member Dan McCue (mccuedan@grinnell.edu) if you are interested.

I have started 2009 so excited about YPIowa! In February, we held our strategic planning session as a board. We have a board member who regularly says "think big" and we did. There is no status quo when it comes to planning - strategic planning is a chance to put away the task list and say "What should we be doing?, Where can we have the most impact? and How can we provide the resources that are most needed for the state?" YPIowa has always focused on connecting groups from around the state to eachother as well as the needs of young professionals in Iowa and the best ways to directly impact our state. You will see many opportunities to be involved on a statewide level this year. Our rollout of the ambassador's program has been a year of hard work behind the scenes, but well worth the effort to provide an organized and effective program. The YPIowa conference, to be held in Des Moines, is almost completely organized and the speaker lineup is phenomenal. If you are a board member of your local organization, you have received a survey to give input on topics for the Leaders Academy that will be held in Ames in June. Over 100 people attended the YPIowa day at the Capitol. Through our strategic planning session, one of our goals was to increase the number of people involved in our committees. I invite those of you that are interested to look at joining one of the YPIowa committees. There are several options and time commitment levels. The committees are: Advocate (day at the capitol), Connect (ambassadors program), and Educate (leader's academy, resources for local groups). As president of YPIowa, I continuely find myself amazed by the motivated people I meet from across the state. So many of you are doing meaningful things for your communities and volunteering in so many capacities. I am so excited with what we can accomplish when we work together and I hope to see you at an upcoming event!
Measuring Your Membership

As young professional organizations it is important that we understand not only traditional demographic information on our members but how our young professionals impact the community in which they live. During the 2008 YP International Summit held in Cocoa Beach, FL, and hosted by Next Generation Consulting, Next Gen discussed its YP Global Impact Survey and the nationwide results from 2008. Next Gen is a marketing group specializing in generation X. Its survey is designed to measure the economic impact of young professionals in their communities. The results can then be used to explain the importance of including young professionals in community decision making. The Next Gen survey measures economic indicators such as home ownership, entrepreneurship and household income. It also asks how long young professionals have lived in their community and how long they intend to remain. In addition, to economic indicators, the Next Gen survey attempts to measure young professionals perceptions of their community including the impact of various factors on a young professional’s decision to move to and/or remain in the community. Some of the factors measured include cost of lifestyle, community vitality (including parks, trails, wellness opportunities, etc.), nightlife, diversity, earning ability, lifelong learning opportunities and transportation. Gathering the information is only the first step. It is the responsibility of YPO’s to create a story out of the data. By highlighting the contribution of young professionals to the economic well being of a community, both short and long term, community leaders have extra reason to seek out and give voice to young professionals in their community.
YPIowa is conducting a statewide survey to measure many of these same factors on a statewide basis. Please encourage YPs in your community to respond to the survey. We will all benefit from more inclusive and representative results. Please click here to complete the 2009 YPIowa survey aimed at identifying how our young professionals organizations assist in retaining Iowa’s best and brightest, as well as measure the impact our YPOs are having on our community and state. New Chamber program merges Next Generation & Access Iowa
The Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce has brought a new initiative into the fold. “I am thrilled to announce that the Next Generation Commission and Access Iowa are formally merging to create a new Chamber program which is devoted to developing the future business leaders of Cedar Rapids,” states Shannon Meyer, Chamber CEO. The new Chamber program will focus on connecting young leaders to civic, social, leadership and charitable initiatives. Christian Fong, Next Generation Chair, “I really believe in this emerging Chamber program - the transfer of community and business leadership from one generation to the next must be purposeful, and it is what I believe is occurring.”Based on the collaboration of strategic priorities from each sector, Access Iowa and Next Generation Commission see this as an opportunity to develop a much needed resource for young talent wanting to become engaged in their community. Live Healthy Iowa YP Challenge Update
As of Monday, April 6, 2009 a total of 645 pounds have been lost during more than 3,487 hours of activity logged.
142 participants on 18 teams have competed throughout the Live Healthy Iowa YP Challenge. With only a couple of weeks remaining WC Hype #1 is leading the activity and weightloss categories.
Live Healthy Iowa participants have lost over 79,790 pounds and logged over 42,337,695 minutes of activity in just over 75 days!I would like to congratulate all of you participating in the Live Healthy 100 Day Challenge and encourage you to continue your path to a healthier you! UI to help groups sponsor statewide career awareness events
The University of Iowa's Consider Iowa program is providing awards to groups across the state to assist with economic development by keeping young workers and jobs in Iowa.
Project Network, a talent retention initiative of Consider Iowa, has given $1,000 to 11 young professional groups to plan and host events for college students that will showcase career paths available to young people in Iowa.
Recipients of the award are young professional groups from Ames, Ankeny, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Valley (Waterloo/Cedar Falls), Dubuque, Keokuk, Marshalltown, Muscatine, Quad Cities, Sioux City, and Webster City. Click here to learn more or find event details.
Starting in February, the events will build awareness and increase knowledge of career possibilities in Iowa so students can make informed decisions about their careers. The groups sponsoring the events can recruit potential new members as well as assist in their communities.
Project Network was created to bring together young professionals and college students searching for career paths. The recipient groups are responsible for all event planning and publicity with guidance and funding support from the Consider Iowa program.
The Consider Iowa program is a statewide initiative administered through The University of Iowa's Pomerantz Career Center that offers career-related resources ranging from resume and cover letter assistance and tips on searching for a job to ways to learn about communities and employers in Iowa. The goal of the program is to build awareness and increase knowledge so that young people can make informed decisions about their careers and consider the possibilities in Iowa.

Hosted By Young Professionals of Ames on June 26th
YPIowa’s Leader's Academy is all about you! Really! A survey was sent to board members across the state asking about what your YPO faces in the coming year. A custom tailored agenda is being put together to address exactly what your goals and objectives are. As fellow board members from across the state, we all get it! We're sold on why being involved in your young professional's organization is important for us and for the state. In general, we all wrestle with the same questions. How do we keep people engage and involved? How do we reach new members? How do we bring people back to our communities and to the state? What are the coolest events other groups have done? What are the trends for the future of our state? The Leader's Academy is a forum for leaders. It is a day-long agenda devoted completely to what you need to be successful in your community - to recharge, to get new ideas and to talk with others going through what you are experiencing in your community. You WILL walk away with new contacts, new ideas and new resources to use in your organization!
Mark your calendars. Registration is open for two people from each young professional/jaycees/community organization. This is because the broader the representation of different organizations, the more ideas we will all walk away with. Talk to your board now to decide who will attend. The cost to attend is $25 and includes lunch. Registration is limited and will open on April 15, 2009. The event will conclude with a social event at the Olde Main Brewery in Ames.

Opportunity to become Commissioner for the ICVS
The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service is seeking service-minded individuals to serve as commissioners for terms to begin on July 1, 2009. A little background information…
State Commissions exist to foster a bi-partisan state-level commitment to advancing service initiatives in the state and to support community service agencies that depend on volunteers to meet community needs, and make a difference in local communities.
Commissioners have the responsibility of developing and communicating a statewide vision and ethic of service and promoting that vision throughout their state. This includes promoting service and developing service programs and collaborative approaches in the state.
Commissioners are appointed by the Governor to three-year staggered terms and may serve no more than two terms. Our commissioners represent a broad and diverse collection of expertise: education; national service programs; older adults; community-based agencies; local and state government; labor; and, business among others. No more than 25 percent of the members may be state employees.
Commissioners are responsible for the general obligations of the Commission and are encouraged to become involved with and provide service to the Commission in a variety of ways, with the most critical being “To consciously but not exclusively ‘represent’ the category in which the Commissioner’s appointment was made under the Executive Order of the Governor.”

I noted on the Budget Travel website a ‘coolest small towns in America’ headline. The website/magazine was seeking nominations for interesting towns of under 10,000.

So, I nominated Grinnell – citing the city’s sense of community, history, architecture, recreational opportunities and the College. They received more than 150 nominations, and culled that list to 22 finalists.

Grinnell is among them! And it’s the only place in Iowa among the 22.

In 2008, 36,791 Iowans participated in a Live Healthy program. They lost over 138,271 pounds and logged over 63,000,000 minutes of activity. Since its inception, over 128,425 people have participated in the program. Participants have logged over 19.7 million miles of activity and lost over 491,344 pounds. There are now hundreds of human interest stories depicting the success of this campaign.

Here’s how you can get involved:

Form a team of 2-10 people
Designate a captain
Captains should visit your local Hy-Vee food store for a discount registration code (available by January 1). This code can be received at checkout after a $15.00 purchase of participating partners’ products. Please see the store for more details. Look for the Live Healthy America display!
Visit www.livehealthyiowa.org and team captains will register their team members for the Live Healthy Iowa 100 Day Challenge.

YP Day at the Capitol 2009

The next YP Day at the Capitol will be February 23, 2009. This annual event was started by YPIowa in 2007 to unite young professionals across Iowa and provide an opportunity to connect with legislators. Many of your YP organizations have participated in in the past, and YPIowa wants to offer you the opportunity to be involved in the planning process as well.

We will hold a statewide conference call every other week starting Tuesday, December 16, at 11:00 a.m. The calls will be brief, about hour to 45 minutes, and will outline the following:

*Main objective and programming
*Schedule of events
*Logistics
*Marketing of the event to YPs

If you would like to participate please join the conference call or email me at jypalmer@gmail.com for the conference call details. We welcome everyone's participation. If the call times do not work with your schedule but you would still like to be involved please let me know. Lots of upcoming events this winter for the Grinnell Young Professionals...

Thursday, December 11, 5:30 p.m., we'll have a pub night at Lonnski's Pub, 922 1/2 Main Street in Grinnell. Be there!
In January, we'll have a wine tasting featuring Brad Erickson and Colleen Klainert, proprietors of the Ladora Bank Bistro.
Saturday, February 7, we'll road trip to Des Moines for hockey night. The Iowa Chops will face the Rockford IceHogs.
In March, we'll have a scrapbooking workshop.

Hello Grinnell Area Young Professionals --

We've been hard at work planning some great events for the next few months. From wine tastings to hockey, there will be some fun to be had.

The next YP gathering will be Thursday, November 20 at 5:30pm at the newly-restored Linden House B&B in Lynvillle. Visit www.lindenhouse.com to learn more.

The event will be a chance for attendees to meet and network with faculty and staff from the Montezuma school district. There will be appetizers and an open bar, courtesy of Brownells. There is also an opportunity to stick around for the fabulous meals being prepared at the Linden House dining room. Let Rachel Daly know if you're interested in staying for dinner!

Also, reach out to others who you think might be interested in joining the group. Anyone who thinks of themself as young and a professional is welcome to attend!
